Where it came from
Black Orchid was Tom Ford's first fragrance under his own name, launched in 2006 after he left Gucci. The brief was a dark, glamorous scent a man or a woman could wear. It arrived in heavy black glass and made itself hard to ignore.
What it smells like
It opens rich and a little strange: black truffle, ylang-ylang and a twist of bergamot. The heart is the orchid, spiced and creamy, with lotus and dark florals. It dries down into patchouli, vanilla and incense, warm and almost edible. Sweet, savoury and smoky at the same time. There is very little else that smells like it.
Who it suits
Black Orchid was never built to please a whole room. Some people find it intoxicating. Others find it too much. It works best on cold evenings and nights out, when you want to be remembered. One spray on clothing carries for hours, so go light.
