Some fragrances want to be liked. Tom Ford Black Orchid is not one of them. Since 2006 it has walked into rooms and dared people to have an opinion. Most do.
Where it came from
Black Orchid was Tom Ford's first signature scent under his own name, launched in 2006 after he left Gucci. He wanted a fragrance that felt like luxury and a little like danger. The brief was a dark, glamorous oriental that a man or a woman could wear. The result was a bottle of black glass and a scent nobody could ignore.
What it smells like
It opens rich and strange: black truffle, ylang-ylang and a twist of bergamot. The heart is the orchid itself, spiced and creamy, with lotus and dark florals. Then it dries down into patchouli, vanilla and incense, warm and almost edible. It is sweet, savoury and smoky all at once. There is nothing else quite like it.
Why it divides people
Black Orchid is not a crowd-pleaser and it never tried to be. Some people find it intoxicating. Others find it too much. That is the point. It is a statement scent for nights out, cold weather and moments when you want to be remembered. Wear it to the office at your own risk.
How to wear it
Go light. One spray on clothing carries for hours, and this is a fragrance that rewards restraint. It suits autumn and winter, evenings and occasions. Unisex in the truest sense, it reads as confident on anyone bold enough to wear it.
