In 2023, the Estée Lauder Companies paid about 2.8 billion dollars for Tom Ford. The fragrance house was under twenty years old.
Tom Ford founded his own label in 2005 with Domenico De Sole, the former head of Gucci Group. Ford had already made his name reviving Gucci through the 1990s. The new house opened with beauty, eyewear and fragrance rather than ready-to-wear.
Fragrance came quickly. Black Orchid launched in 2006, a dark scent built around black truffle, ylang-ylang and orchid. It was odd, expensive and hard to ignore, and it sold.
The bigger move was 2007 and the Private Blend collection, a line of high-concentration scents sold at niche prices. Two of them, Tobacco Vanille and Oud Wood, turned into modern reference fragrances that much of the market has chased ever since.
By 2023 the brand had grown enough that Estée Lauder bought it outright, taking the name and every formula, and signing licences for the fashion and eyewear.
The counter sells the glamour. The chemistry is not a secret. Private Blend made its name on a handful of well-understood accords, tobacco and vanilla, oud and rosewood, amber and spice. Most of the money goes on the black bottle and the name pressed into it.
The formulas are not secret, so we rebuild them in UK-made extrait. Our Tobacco Vanilla (our take on Tobacco Vanille) and Oud De Wood (our take on Oud Wood) are 35% concentration sprays. Browse the full Tom Ford collection or the best Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille dupes in the UK.
