Here is the fact shops skip when they cross-sell these two: Side Effect contains no oud at all. People stand at the Initio counter treating them as siblings. They are not even the same family.
Oud for Greatness arrived in 2018 and is the house's biggest name. Saffron, nutmeg and lavender open it, agarwood sits at the centre, and patchouli and musk hold the base. It is a loud, regal oud in the modern Gulf style, smooth rather than medicinal, and it projects for a full working day. When someone says "the Initio one", this is usually the bottle they mean.
Side Effect is older, from 2016, part of the house's Carnal Blends line. Fragrantica lists rum, tobacco, cinnamon and saffron over sandalwood and hedione. It is a bar at midnight: boozy, sweet, warm and slightly wicked. No oud anywhere in the pyramid.
What they do share is saffron and sheer volume. Both are strong, both are winter-first, both fill a room. That is where the kinship ends. Oud for Greatness answers "I want one serious oud". Side Effect answers "I want rum and cinnamon on a night out". Buying one while expecting the other is the most common Initio mistake, and at these prices it stings.

Our read on why: oud is a polarising material. People who want oud really want it, and people who thought they wanted it sometimes do not. Rum and cinnamon is a much easier thing to enjoy on the second wearing.
