Galbanum is the greenest thing in a perfumer's kit. It is a gum resin from Ferula gummosa, an Iranian plant in the same family as carrots and celery. It is tapped from the stem, where it sets into a sticky brown lump.
The smell is not leafy or pretty. It is sharp, bitter and stem-like, closer to a snapped green shoot than a flower. In a small dose it reads fresh and cool. Push it harder and it turns almost medicinal.
This is the note behind Chanel No. 19, launched in 1971 and named for Coco Chanel's birthday on 19 August. It used a high grade of Iranian galbanum to cut against a powdery iris. That green-against-powder tension is the whole idea of the scent.
