Both open on cardamom. That is where the overlap ends, and it is also why people who love one often assume they will love the other.
Oud Wood (2007)
Composed by Richard Herpin for the Private Blend line in 2007. Tom Ford Beauty describes it as rosewood and cardamom giving way to oud, sandalwood and vetiver, with tonka bean and amber underneath.
The build is dry. Rosewood keeps the top slightly rosy and creamy, the oud sits low rather than shouting, and the vetiver stops the tonka turning it sweet. It is a woody fragrance with an oud accent, not an oud fragrance.
Ombré Leather (2018)
Composed by Sonia Constant, launched in 2018. Cardamom on top, then leather and jasmine sambac in the heart, over amber, moss and patchouli.
The jasmine is the detail most reviews skip. It is what keeps the leather from reading like a saddle shop, adding a soft floral bloom against the smoke. The moss and patchouli then pull it earthy and slightly bitter.
The actual difference
Same spice at the door, then one turns into a room and the other into a jacket. Oud Wood is quiet, close to the skin and warm. Ombré Leather pushes outward, with more contrast and more grip.
Amber sits in both bases, which is why the two can smell related on paper. On skin they are not competing for the same occasion.
What buyers get wrong
Plenty of people order Oud Wood expecting a heavy Middle Eastern oud and find it soft, almost polite. That is by design. If you want oud that announces itself, Oud Wood is the wrong bottle and no amount of spraying fixes it.
The reverse trap is buying Ombré Leather as an everyday office scent. It projects, and at close range in a meeting room it does not go unnoticed.
