Gucci Intense Oud launched in 2018 as part of Alessandro Michele's quiet reformation of the Gucci fragrance line. By that point Michele had been creative director for three years and had spent the time pulling the house away from sleek minimalism and back toward maximalist Florentine craft. Intense Oud was the first Gucci scent that felt fully aligned with that change. It is unapologetically rich, faintly old-world, and built around two of the most expensive raw materials in modern perfumery.
The house brought in Karine Dubreuil-Sereni to compose it, working alongside Givaudan's perfumer team. Dubreuil-Sereni is the same nose behind Hermes Eau de Pamplemousse Rose and several Roja Parfums creations. She is known for treating florals with restraint and letting woods do the bass work, which is exactly the shape of Intense Oud.
The note pyramid is short, which is usually a sign that a fragrance is carrying its weight on quality rather than quantity. Raspberry, pear and saffron open it. The fruit is the cleverest part of the composition because it stops the saffron from going dusty and the rose from going granny. Damask rose and orange blossom carry the heart for nearly an hour. The base is the headline: agarwood, leather, patchouli and frankincense. It is the same family as Tom Ford Oud Wood and Versace Pour Femme Oud Royal, but the way the rose and fruit play off each other gives it a softer Florentine accent.
Why people buy it
Intense Oud is the rare designer-house oud that does not flatten into a flat sweet cliche. It carries genuine character. The fruity opening is original. The rose is real rather than synthetic-sweet. The agarwood note in the base reads more like a quality wood than the medicinal oud accord cheaper fragrances rely on. Wear time is 8 to 9 hours on most skin, sillage is moderate at the start and tightens into a close skin scent after two hours.
The price has crept. A 90ml at most UK retailers now sits around £165 and the discovery routes are limited.
How to wear it
Designed for evening and cold weather. One spray on a wool collar, one on the inside of a wrist. Avoid spraying onto silk or cashmere directly because the patchouli can stain. Holds up beautifully on layered clothing because the base notes need a fibre to grip. Not the right choice for a hot summer office. Brilliant for autumn evenings and winter dinners.
The Aromara version
This is the brief we used for Florence Oud. Same raspberry-pear-saffron opening, same Damask rose and orange blossom heart, same agarwood-leather-patchouli-frankincense base. Built at 35% Extrait so a single application reads at 7+ hours on skin. £40 instead of £165, with our 60-day refund if you can tell it from the original. The Gucci bottle is the Gucci bottle. We focus on the smell, the wear, and the room it walks into.
Try a 5ml sample of Florence Oud for £6.99, or skip to the 50ml at £40.
