What the 21 means
It is not a year or a batch. Guerlain soak Vanilla planifolia pods in alcohol for 21 days to make the tincture at the heart of this scent. They call 21 the golden number of Guerlain vanilla.
It is one of six extraits in their L'Art et La Matière Les Extraits Signature line. Each one is named after a Guerlain raw material and carries its own number: Rose Centifolia 1, Iris Pallida 6, Bergamote Fantastico 11, Vanille Planifolia 21, Jasmin Grandiflorum 30 and Tonka Sarrapia 75.

What Vanille Planifolia smells like
Not cupcake vanilla. This is the grown-up kind.
It opens spiced and a little smoky. Then the vanilla comes through, rich and resinous, over a warm ambery base. The dry-down is powdery musk that clings to clothes for hours.
Reviewers call it elegant and very long lasting, especially on fabric. A few find the opening vintage or smoky. The biggest complaint by far is the price.
