Vanilla is everywhere right now. Not the synthetic flat vanilla that used to be a byword for cheap fragrance, but real, rich, complex vanilla. Warm tonka. Creamy benzoin. Sweet marshmallow. The kind of vanilla that makes people ask what you're wearing.
The problem is the fragrances doing vanilla best tend to cost a fortune. Kilian, Tom Ford, Maison Margiela, all of them are charging £200 to £300 for a decent vanilla-forward scent. We think there's a better way.
We tested a range of vanilla fragrances under £10 in the UK and found three from our own range that genuinely hold up against the expensive originals. Here's our honest take.
What to Look for in a Vanilla Fragrance
Not all vanilla fragrances are the same, and this matters a lot when you're choosing one.
There are broadly three types. First, clean vanilla: fresh, almost transparent, white musk and vanilla working together without much sweetness. Second, warm tonka vanilla: deeper and creamier, with coumarin (the compound in tonka that smells of warm hay and caramel). Third, gourmand vanilla: candy-sweet, marshmallow, almost edible, the kind that gets described as a "skin scent."
Longevity is the other key thing. Cheap vanilla fragrances tend to use vanillin as a shortcut, which fades fast and goes powdery. Quality vanilla fragrances use a blend of vanilla absolute, ethyl vanillin, and supporting benzoin or tonka that holds through the drydown. That's what we look for.
Our Three Picks
Bianco by Aromara
Bianco (Italian for white) is a clean, luminous vanilla with a white floral backdrop. It opens with soft citrus and creamy musk, then settles into a warm vanilla heart with hints of sandalwood. The drydown is soft, slightly powdery, and incredibly wearable. This is the office-safe vanilla, the one you wear when you want something comforting without being too sweet.
Longevity is excellent, 7 to 8 hours on skin. Projection is soft but present, a skin-close scent rather than a room-filler. Ideal for people who find most vanilla fragrances too heavy.
Tonkara by Aromara
Tonkara is the warm one. This is inspired by the kind of deep, enveloping tonka bean fragrance that you'd find in a niche perfumery. The opening is smooth and spiced, nutmeg and a hint of pepper over that distinctive coumarin warmth. The heart is pure tonka bean richness, deep and woody at the same time.
The drydown is the real star. Warm skin, a hint of soft amber, and that characteristic tonka sweetness that never tips into cloying. It wears close to the skin in a genuinely intimate way. This one gets compliments.
Longevity: 7 to 8 hours on skin, and it keeps projecting throughout.
Delight by Aromara
If Bianco is the clean vanilla and Tonkara is the warm vanilla, Delight is the sweet vanilla. This is inspired by Kilian's Love, Don't Be Shy, one of the most beloved sweet fragrances ever made. Marshmallow, orange blossom, honey and vanilla wrapped around a soft musky core. It's the kind of scent that makes people want to stand closer to you.
It's sweet but it's not childish. The orange blossom keeps it grounded. The musk keeps it sophisticated. And the 35% concentration means the sweetness doesn't go flat after an hour like cheaper alternatives do. This one genuinely lasts.
Longevity: 7 to 9 hours on skin. Excellent projection in the first few hours, then a beautiful close-to-skin sweetness.
How We Compared Them to the Originals
We tested each Aromara vanilla against a comparable expensive option: Bianco against a clean white musk vanilla from a major house, Tonkara against a tonka-forward niche scent, and Delight directly against Kilian Love, Don't Be Shy.
The results were consistent. In blind tests, most testers couldn't reliably identify which was the expensive original. The concentration makes the real difference. At 35%, these fragrances have the same richness and longevity as perfumes at three to four times the price.
The one area where the originals won was the very opening, the first 10 to 15 minutes. High-end fragrances often use more expensive top note ingredients that give a more striking initial impact. But from 15 minutes onwards, the Aromara versions held up consistently.

Which Vanilla Is Right for You?
Bianco suits you if you want something subtle, office-friendly, and clean. It won't polarise anyone. It's the vanilla for people who say they don't like vanilla fragrances.
Tonkara suits you if you want something warmer and more distinctive. It's the vanilla for evenings, for colder months, for when you want to smell genuinely interesting.
Delight suits you if you want something sweet and attention-grabbing. It's the vanilla for people who love compliments and don't mind wearing something unmistakably sweet.
Honestly? The £5 5ml option lets you try all three for £15. That's the smart move.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best vanilla perfume dupe in the UK?
It depends on what type of vanilla you want. Delight is the best for a Kilian-style marshmallow vanilla. Tonkara is best for a warm, tonka-forward scent. Bianco is best for clean, subtle vanilla. All are available from £5.
Do vanilla perfumes last long?
Quality ones do. All three Aromara vanilla fragrances are at 35% concentration, which gives 7 to 9 hours on skin. Many cheaper vanilla perfumes use low-quality vanillin that fades fast and goes powdery. These don't.
Are these vanilla perfumes suitable for work?
Bianco is excellent for the office, soft and inoffensive. Tonkara and Delight are a bit more noticeable but still office-appropriate for most environments.
What's the difference between Tonkara and Bianco?
Tonkara is warm, creamy and deep with a real tonka bean richness. Bianco is lighter, cleaner and more subtle with a white floral edge. Both are genuinely lovely, just in different directions.
Are Aromara fragrances vegan?
Yes. All Aromara fragrances are vegan and cruelty-free, made in the UK.
