The house, and the Olivier era
Creed wants you to believe it was founded in 1760, dressing Queen Victoria and Napoleon III. The reality is messier. The modern Creed empire was built by Olivier Creed, who took over from his father in the 1970s and turned a small French perfumery into the most aspirational name in masculine fragrance. He did it with marketing, a confident French accent, and the very useful claim that every celebrity in Hollywood wore his bottles.
Some of them genuinely did. Robert Redford has long been linked to Green Irish Tweed, as has George Clooney. Pierce Brosnan made it explicitly his during his 1990s Bond run, which is when Green Irish Tweed quietly became the unofficial fragrance of being good at your job and not talking about it.
1985, and the perfumer Creed prefers you forget
The official story is that Olivier Creed composed Green Irish Tweed himself. The actual story, told for decades by the perfumer in question, is that Pierre Bourdon created it. Bourdon was a Roure-trained nose at the top of his game. He built Green Irish Tweed for Creed in 1985, fell out with Olivier over credit, and a few years later composed a fragrance for Davidoff that smelled suspiciously similar. That one was called Cool Water. The entire 1990s aquatic men's category descends from this argument.
The gamble in 1985 was violet leaf. Masculine fragrance at that point was either powdery Drakkar Noir territory or old-school chypre. Bourdon put a cold, green, slightly metallic violet leaf at the heart of a fougere and surrounded it with iris and ambergris. It should have read as feminine. It did the opposite. It read as a man stepping out of a hot shower in a cold country.
The pyramid

The composition is technically a fresh fougere, but the violet leaf and iris pull it sideways into something more interesting. It is not loud. It is not sweet. It smells expensive in the way that a good tweed jacket looks expensive, slightly understated and entirely confident.
