Rouge Smoking was released in 2020 by the Paris house BDK Parfums, composed by the perfumer Amélie Bourgeois. The brief was to do something genuinely new with cherry, a fruit niche perfumery had largely ignored. The setting Bourgeois imagined was pure Parisian theatre: nightfall in Pigalle, the red glow of the Moulin Rouge through a window, a woman at her mirror getting ready, reaching for the tuxedo that will sharpen her silhouette. Glamour, anticipation, a little danger.
Cherry, almond and powder
The result is a soft, gourmand cherry rather than a sharp or boozy one. It opens on a juicy cherry with pink pepper and bergamot, then the heart turns creamy and almondy: heliotrope and orange blossom give it a marzipan softness, while a dark vanilla adds depth. The base of tonka, cashmere wood, musk and a little ambroxan keeps it smooth and slightly powdery. It is comforting and pretty rather than aggressive, a cherry bakewell reimagined as something elegant.
What it actually smells like
Sweet, creamy and almondy, with a soft cherry at its centre. There is no real smoke here despite the name; instead it is powdery and gourmand, the cherry and almond wrapped in a smooth vanilla-musk warmth.
