Amouage was founded in 1983 in the Sultanate of Oman, conceived as a gift of Omani perfumery to the world and backed by the royal court. Guidance: the one that broke through
Guidance arrived in 2023 as part of Amouage's Odyssey Collection, composed by the prolific and gifted perfumer Quentin Bisch under the house's creative director, Renaud Salmon. Its trick was to take Amouage's classic triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris and wrap it in something irresistibly modern: a creamy, nutty, slightly fruity sweetness. The result kept the house's incense-laced grandeur but added a gourmand warmth a far wider audience could fall for. It worked. Guidance sold out repeatedly and set off an enormous wave of demand, and of imitations.
What it actually smells like
Rich, creamy and resinous. It opens on soft pear and hazelnut with a powdery rose, then frankincense and saffron arrive to give it that unmistakable Amouage smokiness, before settling into a warm base of vanilla, sandalwood and woody akigalawood. The overall effect is luxurious and enveloping, sweet but never simple, the sort of fragrance that smells expensive because it is. It projects well and lasts for many hours.
The £395 question
A bottle of Guidance sits around £395 in the UK, when you can find it in stock at all.
