Al Haramain Perfumes sold its first bottle in 1970, from a single agarwood trading store in Makkah. The name is Arabic for "the two sanctuaries", the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. Half a century on, the company runs showrooms across Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and the United States.
That starting point matters. This is not a fashion label that bolted on a perfume licence. Agarwood, the resin-soaked heartwood behind oud, was the founding product, traded as raw wood decades before oud became a buzzword on Western counters. The range still runs the full traditional spread: concentrated fragrance oils, sprays, bakhoor for burning, and oud itself, alongside the eau de parfums most UK buyers know.
One bottle carried the name global. Amber Oud Gold Edition, launched in 2018, is the gold-boxed unisex eau de parfum from the house's Amber Oud line, built on warm amber, oud wood and a smooth vanilla base.
Now the bit the listings gloss over. Read that name and you expect a heavy, smoky oud. That is not what made it a bestseller. What people actually fall for is the warmth underneath, the sweet amber and vanilla that sits close to the skin and hangs around for hours. The oud is a supporting act. Buy it for the glow, not the wood, and you will not be disappointed.
