Passionfruit smells tropical because of sulphur. The same element you know from struck matches and bad eggs, sitting in the right molecules at the right dose, smells like fruit juice dripping off a spoon.
Chemists mapping yellow passionfruit found the drivers decades ago, and the papers sit in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry: a set of sulphur-carrying molecules led by 3-mercaptohexanol and its acetate, plus ring-shaped ones called oxathianes. Without them the fruit would smell like generic tropical sweets. In traces, they make it smell alive. Wine chemists chase the same molecules, because they are what makes a good Sauvignon Blanc smell of passionfruit.
You cannot press a scent oil out of the pulp, so in perfume the note is an accord, rebuilt from fruity esters and those sulphur materials.
The fragrance that made the note serious is recent. Maison Crivelli's Oud Maracuja arrived in September 2023 as the fourth extrait in the house's collection, composed by perfumer Jordi Fernandez. Fragrantica logs the pyramid: passionfruit, saffron and Turkish rose over oud, benzoin and patchouli, with leather underneath. Maracuja is simply the Portuguese word for passionfruit, borrowed from Brazil, home turf of the vine Passiflora edulis.
Why glue a juice-bar fruit to oud? Tactics. Oud on its own scares off half the room: it is dark, medicinal and animal. A bright fruit up top is the handshake that gets you to the base. The passionfruit does not last the day, and it is not meant to. It opens the door, then saffron and rose walk you down into the woods. When someone calls an oud fragrance surprisingly wearable, a fruit note is usually the reason.
