Mint does not cool anything. Your skin is the same temperature after the spray as before. What changes is the report your nerves send.
The trick is a molecule called menthol and a receptor in your skin called TRPM8. That receptor's day job is detecting real cold. A 2007 paper in the journal Nature named TRPM8 the body's principal detector of environmental cold, and mice bred without it struggle to tell warm surfaces from cold ones. Menthol grabs the same receptor and forces it open without any drop in temperature. The signal reaching your brain is identical either way, so the brain files mint under cold. The chill is a clerical error.
The menthol itself is farm produce. Most of the world's natural supply is distilled from cornmint, Mentha arvensis, grown across Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Chill the crude oil and menthol falls out of it as crystals, which are filtered off and sold by the tonne. Peppermint and spearmint oils bring sweeter, greener characters, but cornmint is the workhorse.
Fine fragrance uses mint with tweezers. The toothpaste association is so strong that a heavy dose reads as bathroom, not skin. The classic fix came in 1995: Francis Kurkdjian's Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier laced mint through lavender and landed it on a warm vanilla base, and the bottle has never left shelves since. Its 2023 follow-up, Le Male Elixir by perfumer Quentin Bisch, keeps the lavender and mint opening and swaps the base for honey, tobacco and tonka bean. Fragrantica logs both pyramids.
The honest note to end on: mint is an opening act. Menthol and mint oils are volatile, so the cold-air effect belongs to the first stretch of wear, and what you smell for the rest of the day is whatever the mint was introducing. Judge a mint fragrance by its base. That is where you will actually live.
