What Is Geranium in Fragrance? The Rose in Most Men's Perfumes

2 min read

The geranium in your fragrance and the geranium on a British windowsill are not the same plant. Perfumery's geranium is Pelargonium graveolens, the rose geranium, a plant that starts out in South Africa. And the scent does not come from its flowers. It comes from the leaves.

The leaves and stems are steam distilled into an oil built mainly on citronellol and geraniol, the same two alcohols that make rose smell of rose. That shared chemistry is the whole trick. Geranium reads rosy, but with a lemony twist, a cool minty edge and far less powder than the real thing. Crush a leaf between two fingers and you get the blueprint: sharp green rose with citronella underneath.

Where it grows changes what you get. The most prized oil comes from Réunion, the Indian Ocean island once called Île Bourbon, where the crop was planted from around 1870. Bourbon geranium layers a green, fruity-mint character over the rose. Morocco and Algeria grow it too, and The Perfume Society has reported Chanel experimenting with geranium in its own fields at Grasse.

In finished perfume, geranium is the backbone of the fougère, the aromatic family that covers a large share of men's perfumery. Dior Sauvage carries it in the heart next to lavender. It cuts sweetness and stops lavender going soapy.

Now the useful part. When a men's fragrance smells faintly of rose, you are almost always smelling geranium. Rose oil is one of the most expensive materials in perfumery, and geranium has long stood in for it. Perfumers do not treat that as a compromise. Geranium stays fresh and green where rose turns powdery, and it sits happily beside citrus and lavender in ways true rose does not.

If the bergamot-and-geranium signature is your thing, our Savage Essence (our take on Dior Sauvage) keeps geranium in the heart of a UK-made 35% extrait spray, and Eros Pour Homme (our take on Versace Eros) runs it against mint and tonka. More options in the best Dior Sauvage dupes in the UK.
