The spice comes from the seeds of Elettaria cardamomum, a plant in the ginger family, native to the Western Ghats of southern India. Guatemala now grows more of it than anywhere else. The pods are picked green and dried whole.
The split personality is chemistry. Cardamom oil is high in 1,8-cineole, the same cooling molecule found in eucalyptus. That is the cold, almost minty lift you get first. Underneath sits the spice itself: sweet, peppery, a little resinous. Green and warm at once.
That balance is why perfumers reach for it. Most spices only push heat. Cardamom brings freshness with the warmth, so it can sit up top like a citrus or in the heart like a spice. It works next to woods, next to rose, next to other spices, without turning heavy or sour.
