Creed Aventus does not smell smoky by accident. The dry, leathery haze under all that pineapple comes from one base note: birch.
Birch in perfumery almost always means birch tar, and it is not squeezed from a leaf. It is made by dry distillation, heating birch bark in a low-oxygen kiln until the wood breaks down into a thick, dark oil. The method is ancient. Neanderthals used the same tar as glue tens of thousands of years ago.
The smell is smoke, hide and warm rubber, with a phenolic sharpness. Chemically the tar is a soup of phenols such as guaiacol, cresol and creosol, the same family that makes a bonfire or a smoked kipper. In trace amounts it reads as leather. Used heavily it reads as a campfire.
You will meet birch in two places. Fresh, fruity scents borrow a little of it for a dry masculine base. Dark leather scents pour it in for smoke. In the first it is a whisper. In the second it is the whole point.
Here is the bit the marketing leaves out. Raw birch tar is one of the most restricted naturals in the trade. IFRA, the body that sets fragrance safety standards, bans the crude oil because it carries polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Perfumers use a rectified version instead, redistilled under vacuum to strip the harmful compounds while keeping the smoky phenols. So the birch in your bottle is real birch, cleaned up to a legal limit.
In Aventus, birch sits in the base with oakmoss and ambroxan, holding the fruit up and giving the scent its famous smoky-dry finish. Fragrantica lists it among the base notes, and it is the reason the fragrance never turns into a simple fruit bowl.
