If Absolute Aphrodisiac is the lift scent, Psychedelic Love is the after-party one. Released in 2019, two years after Initio Parfums Privés launched the Carnal Blends collection that made the house's reputation, Psychedelic Love is the slower, dreamier sibling. The brief was a floral musk that felt like the long, soft tail of an evening rather than its opening salvo.
Initio itself is a Paris-based niche house founded in 2015 by Khaled Eltawil, with creative direction inside the Kilian Hennessy orbit. The Carnal Blends collection was built around three rules. Use the most disclosed concentration the house could reasonably bottle, keep the note pyramid short and legible, and chase a single emotional accord rather than a story. Side Effect was the leather-tobacco one. Atomic Rose was the cherry-rose-vanilla one. Psychedelic Love took the rose and pushed it through heliotrope, hedione, and a base of myrrh and sandalwood.
The perfumer is Maurice Roucel, one of the all-time greats. Roucel has the kind of CV that goes Tocade, Musc Ravageur, 24 Faubourg, Insolence, Envy Me, L'Instant de Guerlain. He is the perfumer most associated with the modern luxury-musk archetype. Psychedelic Love sits comfortably inside his canon because it lets the musk do the work and treats the florals as light. Ylang-ylang and bergamot give the first ten minutes a slight sweetness. Heliotrope, Bulgarian rose and hedione hold the middle for the next hour. Myrrh and sandalwood land you in something that smells like very clean skin and a closed bedroom.
Why people buy it
Psychedelic Love is the kind of fragrance that gets compliments at the end of an evening rather than the beginning. The first ten minutes are pretty. The hour after that is mesmerising. By the time you get home it has melted into your skin in a way that makes people lean in. Wear time is long, sillage starts moderate and tightens as the night goes on.
It is also, for the audience it targets, a quiet status signal. People who know niche know this bottle. People who do not, just register that you smell incredible without being able to pin a brand to it.
The price reflects the positioning. The standard 90ml bottle sits around £230 in the UK at the time of writing. There is no Eau de Toilette flanker, no smaller travel size, and the discovery options are limited.
How to wear it
Skin chemistry matters here more than most. On warm, slightly sweet skin it is gorgeous. On dry skin it can read a little thin. Apply at the throat and inside elbow, not on clothes. Build slowly. One spray more than you think you need is one spray too many. Best in spring and summer evenings, but works year-round at lower doses.
The Aromara version
This is the brief we used for Trance. Same ylang-bergamot opening, same heliotrope-rose-hedione heart, same myrrh-sandalwood close. Built at 35% Extrait so it sits on the skin for 7+ hours. £40 instead of £230, with our 60-day refund if you can tell it from the original. The Initio bottle is the Initio bottle. We are after the smell, the longevity, and the way it lingers.
Try a 5ml sample of Trance for £6.99, or skip to the 50ml at £40.
