Parfums de Marly: The 18th-Century King Behind a Modern Fragrance Powerhouse

2 min read Jul 22, 2026

Parfums de Marly looks like an old French house. It is not. It was founded in 2009. What it borrowed was a much older idea.

The name comes from the Château de Marly, the private retreat where King Louis XV escaped the strict etiquette of Versailles and received only his inner circle. An invitation to Marly was one of the rarest privileges at court. Louis XV's court was known as "la cour parfumée", the perfumed court, and fragrance was part of the status.

Look at any Parfums de Marly bottle and you will see a horse crest. That is a nod to the Marly Horses, sculptures commissioned in 1743 by Louis XV from the sculptor Guillaume Coustou to stand at the château gates. The whole identity is one long reference to that world.

The man behind it is Julien Sprecher, who came from a family in the fragrance trade and launched the house in 2009. In the brand's own words, he built it "to express my own vision of modern Haute Parfumerie that disrupts the codes by taking inspiration freely from the spirit of 18th-century France."

The history lesson only matters because the scents landed. Pegasus arrived in 2011. Layton followed in 2016, a sweet blend of apple, lavender and vanilla that became a genuine signature-scent staple for men and women. Delina came in 2017, a rose, lychee and vanilla scent that turned into one of the most recognised women's launches of its decade.

Those bottles now sit well past £200 each. The story is beautiful. The formula is not a secret.

We rebuild that DNA in UK-made extrait, minus the château markup. Our Chivarly is our take on Layton and Altair our take on Althair, both 35% concentration. See the full Parfums de Marly collection or read the best Parfums de Marly dupes in the UK.
