Nishane Hacivat: The Istanbul Niche That Made Pineapple Smart Again

3 min read Jun 14, 2026

There are fragrances that announce themselves, and then there is Hacivat. It does not arrive. It is already in the room, somewhere between the second espresso and the first handshake, green and smoky and quietly expensive.

The house: Istanbul, niche, and a different kind of confidence

Nishane was founded in 2012 by Mert Guzel and Murat Katran, two friends who opened the first niche perfumery in Turkey. Their atelier sits in Istanbul, a city that has been trading in incense, rose, and oud for longer than most European houses have been trading at all.

The name Hacivat is borrowed from Karagoz, the Turkish shadow-puppet tradition. Hacivat is the educated one in the pairing, the city man with the careful vocabulary, foil to the rougher, funnier Karagoz. Picking him as the face of a fragrance was a thesis statement.

2016, Jorge Lee, and the Aventus problem

Hacivat was composed in 2016 by Jorge Lee. By then, Creed's Aventus had spent the best part of a decade rewriting the rules of masculine fragrance. Lee's solution was to refuse the chase. Hacivat takes the pineapple as a starting point, then walks it somewhere Aventus never goes. Where Creed leans sweet, smoky, almost rock-star, Hacivat goes green, dry, faintly bitter.

The composition

The top is the famous part. Pineapple, bergamot, pink pepper. The pineapple is not the candied, juicy version you find in supermarket body sprays. It is sharper, almost unripe.

The heart is where Hacivat earns its reputation. Patchouli grounds it. Cypress brings a clean, almost coniferous green. Oakmoss does the rest, that classic chypre damp-earth note.

The base is tobacco, pepper, and vetiver. Tobacco gives the warmth and the suggestion of smoke. Vetiver dries it out.

Why it endures

Hacivat has become the smart-masculine cult fragrance of the last decade. It is the bottle men reach for when they want compliments without theatrics. Among UK collectors it occupies a very specific lane: the Aventus alternative for the man who has stopped wanting to smell like Aventus.

The price problem

A 100ml bottle of Hacivat retails around £230 in the UK. The other problem is availability. Nishane is still niche enough that it is not on every counter.

The Aromara alternative

Acivat by Aromara is built around the same pineapple-bergamot-pink-pepper opening, the same green chypre heart, the same tobacco-vetiver dry-down. £40 a bottle, not £230. 35% Extrait concentration. Seven hours of wear, guaranteed. Sixty days to return it.

Closing

Hacivat is a great fragrance. What we have built is the same idea at one-seventh of the price, in a stronger concentration, with a guarantee.
