After Angel, anything
In 1992 Thierry Mugler's Angel had detonated in the perfume world, a sweet patchouli-and-praline gourmand so radical it split opinion violently and changed feminine perfumery forever. Thirteen years later, in 2005, Mugler did it again with Alien. The brief was a solar goddess: something mystical, radiant and otherworldly, captured in a deep purple bottle shaped like a talisman, a thing that looks more like a relic from an occult ritual than a perfume.
The composition fell to Dominique Ropion, widely regarded as one of the greatest living perfumers, working with Laurent Bruyère, both of IFF. Ropion is famous for bold, architecturally ambitious work, and Alien is a masterclass in doing a great deal with very little.
What it actually smells like
Intense, radiant and unmistakable. A huge, sunlit jasmine sambac sits at the centre, almost narcotic in its richness, wrapped in the warm, slightly fuzzy woodiness of cashmeran and a glowing white amber. There is nothing fresh or fruity to distract from it; the effect is hypnotic and a little hallucinatory, exactly as the name suggests. It is enormously powerful, lasts for an extraordinarily long time and clings to clothes and skin for days. A small amount goes a very long way.
The £185 question
A larger bottle of Alien sits around £185 in the UK, and like Angel before it, the brand built a refillable ritual around the bottle.
