Megamare is one of the strangest commercial successes of the last decade in perfumery. Orto Parisi, the niche house founded by Alessandro Gualtieri after he left Nasomatto, released it in 2018 as part of a quiet line of single-accord experiments. The brief was reportedly half a sentence long: build the smell of the open sea, then make it bigger. The result became one of the most copied scents in modern dupe culture and the bottle that put Orto Parisi on the niche-fragrance map.
Gualtieri himself is the entire creative engine behind Orto Parisi and Nasomatto. He is one of the very few independent perfumers who composes, brands and bottles his own work, with no in-house team and no outsourced perfumer. His other Orto Parisi releases, including Stercus, Boccanera and Cuoium, share the same approach. Pick one accord, push it to the edge of legibility, and trust the customer to find it.
Megamare's note pyramid is short by design. Bergamot, lemon and seaweed open it. The seaweed accord is the entire trick: it is built from calone and a custom marine note that smells less like a beach and more like the inside of a tide pool. Hedione carries the floral-aquatic middle. Ambroxan, cedar and musk hold the base. There is no big amber, no clear vanilla, no synthetic vetiver. Just clean salt, white wood and a long animalic skin musk that develops over hours.
Why people buy it
Megamare is the rare aquatic that does not smell cheap or sport-bottled. The salt accord is convincing rather than literal, and the ambroxan base gives it a much longer wear time than most fresh fragrances. On skin it stays for 8 hours plus. Sillage starts loud for the first thirty minutes, then settles into a close, skin-adjacent trail. Compliments tend to come around hour three when the salt has dried and the ambroxan has bloomed.
It is genuinely unisex. The accord is body-temperature warm rather than skewed masculine or feminine. It works on a man in a Saturday white tee and on a woman in a linen sundress without changing character.
The 50ml costs around £200 in the UK at the time of writing, with limited discovery sets. The price is in part justified by the fact that Gualtieri only produces small batches and the formula has not been reformulated since launch.
How to wear it
Spring and summer days, beachside evenings, and any time you want a fragrance that pretends to be nothing. One spray to the chest, one to a forearm. Holds up well on linen and cotton, less well on heavy wool. Surprisingly, also brilliant in air conditioning because the ambroxan amplifies in dry air.
