Ganymede is named after the largest moon of Jupiter. The man who commissioned it measures suits for a living.
Marc-Antoine Barrois runs an eponymous couture house for men in Paris. His route into perfume ran through a friendship. Around 2014 he met Quentin Bisch, then early in his career at the Swiss fragrance maker Givaudan. Barrois hesitated over perfume at first, then warmed to the idea of dressing skin in something other than cloth, according to a 2019 account in the fragrance journal Cafleurebon.
Their first fragrance, B683, arrived in 2016, named for an imaginary planet inspired by asteroid B612 in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's Le Petit Prince. It spread almost entirely by word of mouth, and Cafleurebon reports the success surprised even its creators.
Ganymede followed in 2019. Barrois told Cafleurebon he wanted "the younger brother of B683, sharing the same DNA but with a personality of its own". The name stacks two stories: the Trojan prince of Greek myth carried off to pour wine for the gods, and the moon later named after him, a world of rock and frozen ocean.
Bisch translated that into what he calls a mineral accord. Its engine is immortelle, the everlasting flower, which smells of straw, dried herbs and curry rather than blossom. Woods, moss and spices complete the stony effect, Italian mandarin and saffron light the top, and a suede note is built from violet and osmanthus. The full listed palette runs mandarin, saffron, violet, osmanthus absolute, akigalawood and immortelle absolute.
And that is the detail rival write-ups gloss over. The famous "mineral" smell of Ganymede is not a space rock. It is a Mediterranean flower used against type. The astronomy is a good story. The perfumery trick underneath is better, and it carried a scent that sold at $195 for 100ml back at launch.
