The house perfumer and his Grasse estate
When Louis Vuitton returned to perfume in 2016 after decades away, it hired Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the son and grandson of Grasse perfumers, gave him the restored Les Fontaines Parfumées estate to work from, and told him to take his time. Pacific Chill, released in 2023, is one of the results: a citrus cologne rebuilt as something richer than the genre usually allows.
What Louis Vuitton says it smells like
Louis Vuitton's own listing calls it a "detox-oriented cologne" and names blackcurrant, cédrat, basil, lemon, coriander and carrot seed as the key notes, with ambrette, peppermint and orange in the description. So: a big, juicy citrus and blackcurrant opening, a green herbal middle from basil and coriander, and a clean, musky finish from ambrette. On uk.louisvuitton.com, Pacific Chill is £265 for the 100ml atomiser, with a 200ml size above it, complimentary engraving, and refills in stores that have a perfume fountain. It is sold only through Louis Vuitton's own site and selected stores. A lovely bottle and a well-made citrus, and a lot of money for a summer scent that fades by lunchtime on most skin.
