Kilian Hennessy did not come from perfume. He came from cognac. His family founded Maison Hennessy in 1765, and he grew up around one of the biggest names in French spirits.
He started his own fragrance house in 2007. The idea was luxury made to last, with refillable bottles and lacquered cases meant to be kept rather than thrown away. His debut scent was Love, Don't Be Shy, a sweet orange-blossom and vanilla gourmand that became the brand's calling card and still sells today.
The drinks bloodline keeps surfacing in the work. Angels' Share arrived in 2020 and takes its name from the cognac trade, the term for the spirit that evaporates from the barrel as it ages. It is warm and boozy, a cognac accord over vanilla, cinnamon and oak. Apple Brandy on the Rocks does much the same, another drink rebuilt as a scent.
In 2016 the Estee Lauder Companies bought the brand, and it later traded under the name Kilian Paris. The backing brought wider distribution and airport counters around the world. The prices stayed near the top of the designer range, where a single bottle can pass two hundred pounds.
Here is what the counter does not tell you. A gourmand accord like the one under Angels' Share is not a locked secret. The cognac, vanilla and tonka structure can be rebuilt closely by any lab that knows the materials well. Most of what you pay at that level is the case, the name on it and the shop it sits in, not the liquid inside.
That gap is the whole reason we exist.
