Christian Dior, it turns out, had a sweet tooth. Among the many things the legendary couturier loved was a particular dessert created just for him by the Paris restaurant Maxim's, a confection called the Diorama Gourmand, of which, deliciously, no photograph or recipe is said to survive. A perfume designed like a pudding
Vanilla Diorama belongs to the prestigious Maison Christian Dior collection, formerly known as La Collection Privée, and was composed by François Demachy, the house's long-serving Parfumeur-Créateur. To get the dessert right, he worked with Julien Dugourd, the pastry chef of the Michelin-starred La Chèvre d'Or, treating the fragrance the way a chef treats a recipe. The aim was a vanilla that felt authentic and intense rather than flat and synthetic, the real, three-dimensional thing.
Rum, cocoa and real vanilla
What he produced is a gourmand with genuine depth. It opens with a flicker of citrus and pink pepper, a little sparkle to stop it being heavy from the off, then the heart turns warm and boozy: rum and cocoa with a touch of cardamom, like the inside of a chocolate liqueur. The base is the star, a rich Madagascar bourbon vanilla rounded with sandalwood and patchouli. It is sweet, yes, but layered and grown-up, the difference between a fine dark chocolate and a chocolate bar.
What it actually smells like
Warm, boozy and rich, a proper vanilla rather than a simple sugary one. The rum and cocoa give it a deep, faintly intoxicating quality, the cardamom keeps it interesting, and the vanilla base is creamy and long-lasting.
