Baccarat Rouge 540 is named after a temperature. Baccarat fuses 24-carat gold into clear crystal at 540 degrees to get its signature red. Francis Kurkdjian built the scent for the crystal house's 250th anniversary in 2014, as a run of 250 numbered bottles. It joined his own label properly in 2015. The Extrait arrived in 2017.
So there are two of them, and they do not behave the same way.
The Eau de Parfum (2015) is the famous one. Jasmine, saffron, amberwood and cedar. Sweet and mineral at once, an airy candy-floss note floating over warm wood. It throws a wide, bright cloud that strangers comment on. When someone says something "smells like Baccarat Rouge", this is the version they mean.
The Extrait (2017) is not simply a stronger pour. Kurkdjian reworked it. Moroccan bitter almond comes in over the jasmine and saffron, and the cedar base gets heavier. The almond makes it creamy and nutty where the EDP is airy. It sits closer to the skin, reads warmer, and feels more like a winter coat than a cloud.
Here is the trap. Extrait means a higher concentration of oils, and people assume that buys a bigger presence. With this pair it mostly does not. The airy saffron top is precisely what carries across a room, and the almond-heavy Extrait trades some of that lift for weight. The Extrait is richer. Buy it for depth rather than reach.
