Freesia is named after a doctor who had nothing to do with perfume. The plant collector Christian Friedrich Ecklon found the flower in South Africa and named it for his friend Friedrich Freese, a physician from Kiel. The name survived. The scent, in a bottle, never has.
Perfumers have tried to capture freesia and failed every time. The Perfume Society records that no usable extract has ever been pulled from the flower. Perfumer Aliénor Massenet calls the note "an imaginary reconstitution". Every freesia in every fragrance is a portrait painted from memory.
The portrait leans on one molecule above all: linalool. Analyses of the living flower put linalool at anywhere from a third to nine tenths of its scent depending on the variety, which is why freesia smells fresh in the same clean way lavender and coriander do. Around that core, perfumers add green sweetness, a peppery sparkle and a watery, just-cut-stem effect. The result is airy, bright, faintly citrus.
You have already smelled it working. Flowerbomb by Viktor&Rolf runs freesia through its heart beside jasmine and rose. Armani's Sì sets May rose and freesia over a blackcurrant opening. In both, the freesia is there to lift a heavy floral heart so it sparkles instead of sitting still.
And that is the right way to read it: freesia is the supporting actor of the floral world. The Perfume Society notes it complements lily of the valley, peony and magnolia but is rarely the star of a perfume itself. On a pyramid, freesia means brightness more than it means a smell you will pick out on your wrist. Some notes exist to be noticed. Freesia exists so the others can be.
