Fig perfume is younger than the Premier League. Nobody had built a fragrance around the fig tree until 1994, when Olivia Giacobetti made Premier Figuier for L'Artisan Parfumeur. The name means "first fig tree", and it was exactly that, the first perfume to treat the tree as a whole subject: leaf, fruit, milky sap, warm bark. Two years later she did it again with Philosykos for Diptyque, and a whole genre existed.
Here is the strange part. There is no fig in fig perfume. The fruit yields no usable oil, and the old fig leaf absolute was abandoned by the industry because it irritates skin. Every fig note you have ever worn is an accord, a built structure. The usual recipe pairs stemone, a molecule with the bitter green smell of snapped stems, with gamma-octalactone, which brings the milky, coconut-cream side. Green leaf plus white sap. Your nose adds them up and reports a fig tree in the sun.
What makes the accord clever is what it skips. The air around an actual ripe fig is dominated by benzaldehyde and hexanal, which read as almond and cut grass. Copy that faithfully and the result smells less like fig than the invented version does. Perfumers chose the drawing over the photograph, and the drawing won.
Thirty years on, the note still sells at the very top of the market. Louis Vuitton's Pacific Chill (2023, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud) tucks fig and dates into its base beneath a wall of citrus, in a scent its maker says was inspired by a detox smoothie in Los Angeles. From a Paris niche house to a smoothie in LA, the fig tree keeps finding work.
So read "fig" on a note list as shorthand for a scene: green shade, milk sap, sun on bark. No orchard was harvested. None was needed.
