Where Halfeti comes from
In a small Turkish village on the banks of the Euphrates, a rose grows that exists almost nowhere else. The Halfeti rose starts a deep red and, as it ages in the area's odd soil and climate, darkens until it looks almost black. Local legend says the rose drinks in the wickedness of the world. In 2015 the London house Penhaligon's built a fragrance around it.
Penhaligon's was founded in London in 1870 by William Penhaligon, a barber who became perfumer to the court. Halfeti belongs to its Trade Routes collection, inspired by the goods that once moved through the markets of the East: flowers, spices, incense and soft leather. The perfumer Christian Provenzano composed it. It is Penhaligon's at its most opulent and least buttoned-up.
What Halfeti smells like
It opens bright and sharp, with bergamot, grapefruit and green cypress laced with saffron and cardamom, the smell of a spice market. Then the heart blooms: a dark, jammy Bulgarian rose dusted with nutmeg and jasmine. The base is where it gets deep, with oud, leather, sandalwood, amber, tonka and a touch of vanilla holding the rose in place. It is a rose for people who think they do not like rose. It projects well and lasts a long time. It is unisex, worn by men and women, and it suits cold weather and evenings.
How much is Halfeti in the UK?
Penhaligon's sells Halfeti eau de parfum at £220 for 100ml (checked September 2026), with a 30ml and a 10ml travel size as well. Some people search for a "Halfeti aftershave", but there is no aftershave in the line; it is an eau de parfum. For £220 you get a lovely rose-oud from a historic house.
