Orto Parisi: Alessandro Gualtieri's Garden of Animalic Scent

2 min read Aug 11, 2026

Orto Parisi was founded in 2014 in Amsterdam by Italian perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri, seven years after he established Nasomatto. The name carries family weight: orto parisi refers to the vegetable garden of his grandfather Vincenzo in Puglia, where Gualtieri spent childhood summers surrounded by olive trees, soil, sweat and overripe fruit.

Gualtieri built Orto Parisi on that memory. The garden as metaphor: bodies as gardens, body odor as the soul made scent. This is perfumery freed from floral convention. The house signs every fragrance alone from its Amsterdam atelier, controlling nothing. No department stores. No marketing campaigns. Distribution moves through a curated network of niche boutiques across Europe, North America and Asia.

The early releases set the tone. Stercus and Boccanera, both 2014, announced the house's commitment to animalic and skin-driven compositions, the territory rivals avoid. These are not fragrances built to please. They are built to provoke, to recall, to disturb. Megamare arrived in 2019 and shifted something. The fragrance went viral on social media, a rare moment for underground niche work. The scent is marine and intensely salty, more ocean-floor than beach resort. It recruited an entirely new generation of buyers to the house without diluting its positioning.

Gualtieri's insistence on working alone, on signing every fragrance, ensures consistency. There is no committee approval, no commercial dilution. The hand of a single practitioner shows in every bottle. That is increasingly rare in niche perfumery, which has itself been colonised by conglomerates and consultants. Orto Parisi remains independent and authored.

The garden reference is more than marketing. It states the brand's philosophy plainly. A garden is specific to place and season, subject to weather, to rot and growth. Orto Parisi treats fragrance the same way, as a living, animalic thing rather than a decoration.
