Pierre Montale spent years in Saudi Arabia before he founded his perfume house. He was creating fragrances for royalty, for nobility, for the people who could afford the real thing. When he moved back to Paris in 2003, he decided to build a brand around the materials he had learned to love.
Oud was his obsession. Most Western perfume lovers in 2003 had never heard of it. Oud is expensive, complex, and for centuries it stayed in the Gulf. Pierre Montale changed that. He became the first to export genuine oud accords to the West, and he built a house around the idea that agarwood does not belong behind a price wall.
When he opened Montale Paris in 2003, the focus was uncompromising. Every fragrance would be built on real materials, on oud when it belonged, and on clarity. No cheap filler. No softening for mass taste. Just the scent, strong and true.
In 2008, he founded a sister house called Mancera with his daughter Amélie, extending the family legacy and proving that the model worked. Today, Montale remains in Paris, still making fragrances built on the same philosophy: rare materials, high concentration, no apology.
The honest bit? Most oud fragrances soften the material for Western noses. Montale never did. That conviction is why the house matters.
