There is a particular kind of perfume that wins by sounding like it does not try. Vanille Nude is one of those. Lancôme released it in 2025 as the soft-focus little sister to a fragrance that has spent more than a decade as the loudest gourmand in the room, and the timing was not accidental. The world had moved on from sugar bombs. It wanted something it could wear to brunch without anyone asking what it was.
The house behind the bottle
Lancôme has been a fixture of French perfumery since 1935, and for most of the last fifteen years its commercial backbone has been a single fragrance. La Vie Est Belle launched in 2012, the result of three years of development and reportedly five thousand trial formulas by Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo. It went on to become the best-selling women's fragrance in France.
The Vanille Nude story
By 2025 the gourmand category had been pulled in two directions. On one end, the maximalist Middle Eastern oud-vanillas. On the other, the so-called clean-girl skin scents that ruled TikTok for a year. Lancôme picked the second lane. Vanille Nude opens with solar jasmine sourced from Lancôme's own Domaine de la Rose in Grasse. Within minutes the centre comes forward: glazed bourbon vanilla from Madagascar, the cooked-sugar kind rather than the raw-pod kind. Underneath sit creamy white musks and sandalwood, the engine doing the actual work. It dries down close to the skin, powdery and warm.
It is not a complicated fragrance. That is the point.
Why it is winning
The clean-girl, cosy-girl, quiet-luxury audience that has dominated fragrance content on TikTok wants exactly this profile. Warm, edible, soft, intimate. Wearable in an office. Acceptable on a first date. Vanille Nude reads as expensive without reading as effort, which is the whole game.
The price problem
The 50ml retails at around £97 in the UK. For a fragrance Lancôme itself describes as a skin scent with up to roughly five hours of intensity, the maths gets uncomfortable. You are paying a luxury-house premium for a deliberately quiet composition.
