How to Make Your Perfume Last Longer: 7 Tips (UK Guide)

3 min read

You spray your fragrance in the morning and by lunch it has vanished. Sound familiar? How long a scent lasts comes down to a few simple things, most of which you can control. Here are seven ways to make your perfume last all day.

1. Moisturise first

Dry skin is the enemy of fragrance. Scent clings to oil, so apply an unscented moisturiser before your fragrance and it will hold for hours longer. This is also why oil-based fragrances last so well.

2. Apply to pulse points

Wrists, neck, behind the ears and the inner elbows are warm spots that gently diffuse scent through the day. Focus your fragrance there rather than spraying into the air.

3. Do not rub your wrists together

It feels natural, but rubbing crushes the delicate top notes and makes the fragrance fade faster. Apply, then let it settle on its own.

4. Layer it

Wearing a matching perfume oil under your spray is the single best longevity trick. The oil sits close to the skin and releases slowly, while the spray projects, so you get both reach and staying power.

5. Spray clothes and hair, carefully

Fabric and hair hold scent longer than skin. A light mist on a scarf or your hairbrush extends the wear. Avoid delicate or pale fabrics that could mark, and do not spray directly onto hair, which can dry it.

6. Store it properly

Heat, light and air break fragrance down. Keep your bottles in a cool, dark place, not on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom, and they will last longer in the bottle too.

7. Concentration is king

This is the big one. The more fragrance oil a scent contains, the longer it lasts. Eau de toilette is only 5 to 15% oil and fades fast. Extrait de Parfum is the strongest spray tier, and a pure perfume oil is stronger still. Every Aromara spray is a 35% Extrait, the highest disclosed concentration in the UK, and our roll-on oils are 100% pure fragrance oil. If you want a scent that genuinely lasts, start with concentration. Read more in our guide to perfume oils, or shop our bestsellers.

FAQ

What makes perfume last longer? Concentration is the biggest factor, followed by moisturised skin and applying to warm pulse points. Higher-concentration scents like Extrait de Parfum and pure perfume oils last the longest.

Does perfume last longer on skin or clothes? Clothes and hair hold scent longer than skin, but skin lets the fragrance develop properly. Layering both gives the best of each.

Do perfume oils last longer than sprays? Yes. With no alcohol to evaporate, a pure perfume oil releases slowly and stays close to the skin for hours.
