Others prefer to avoid it altogether. The strictest position, and the one most halal certification bodies work from, calls for an oil-based or water-based carrier with no alcohol at all.
Beyond alcohol there are ingredient questions. Traditional musks came from animals, musk deer in particular. Most modern fragrances use synthetic musks, but it is worth checking. Civet and castoreum, from cats and beavers, still appear occasionally in niche perfumery. Ambergris, from sperm whales, is a grey area, though most contemporary opinions consider it permissible.
