Gucci: The Florentine House Behind Fragrance's Global Reach

2 min read Aug 10, 2026

Gucci did not start with perfume. Guccio Gucci founded the house in Florence in 1921, inspired by the fine luggage he had seen wealthy travellers carry at the Savoy Hotel in London. He wanted to pair that refined craftsmanship with traditional Florentine artistry. Leather goods, not scent.

Fragrance arrived half a century later. In 1975, Gucci launched its first perfume, Gucci No. 1, created by the legendary nose Guy Robert. It was a late move into a crowded market, but the brand name had weight. What followed was a series of launches that built a fragrance identity around the house's core idea: accessible luxury wrapped in a famous name.

The pattern matters. Gucci Guilty (2012) was a warm, spiced fragrance that became a bestseller. Gucci Bloom (2017) leaned into florals and citrus. These were not experimental niche creations. They were designed to be recognisable, wearable, and profitable. The formula worked. Today, Gucci is one of the top-selling designer fragrance houses globally.

Now the part most fashion houses gloss over. Gucci is owned by Kering, the Paris-based luxury conglomerate. That ownership shapes everything: the distribution, the pricing, the creative direction. It is not a small Florentine workshop perfecting a single scent. It is a commercial operation with quarterly targets. That does not make Gucci fragrances bad. It means they are engineered for scale.

The house has grown beyond its original scents into a collection of flankers, special editions, and collaborations. If you want the Gucci DNA without the designer price tag, look for the scent notes that recur: warm spices, florals, a touch of woods. Aromara builds that same DNA into our dupes. Our Florence Oud (our take on Gucci Intense Oud) captures the warm, resinous depth the house favours in its oriental fragrances. See the full Gucci collection for more.
