Sauvage has been one of the best-selling men's fragrances of the last decade. The problem is there are now four of them, and people buy the wrong one all the time. They do not smell the same.
All four come from the same nose, Dior's François Demachy. Here is how they split.
Sauvage EDT (2015). The original. Fresh, sharp and clean, built on bright bergamot and a big dose of ambroxan, with a peppery bite. Ambroxan is the signature: that clean, radiant, almost mineral hum you can smell from across a room. This is the blue-sky, fresh-shaved version. Some people find it a touch harsh.
Sauvage EDP (2018). The warmer one. It keeps the fresh opening, then adds star anise, nutmeg and a soft vanilla underneath. Rounder, sweeter and easier to wear in cold weather. If you want one bottle that covers most occasions, this is usually it.
Sauvage Parfum (2019). The woody one. Less citrus, more sandalwood and depth. It sits close to the skin and speaks quietly, best for evenings.
Sauvage Elixir (2021). The outlier. A concentrate, so you spray far less. It leans into lavender and spice, with cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom up top and liquorice and vetiver underneath. It shares a name with the EDT, not much else. Potent, and not everyone's taste.
Quick guide. Heat and freshness, go EDT. One all-rounder, go EDP. Close and woody, go Parfum. Spicy lavender bomb, go Elixir.
